View Full Version : RHD (Right hand drive) aptera?
Any idea if there will ever be a RHD (right hand drive) aptera?
As soon as I saw it I said to my self I want one of these. Only prob is that I dont live in CA, I don't even live in the USA. I actually live in england where cars drive on the left and thus need to be RHD.

Relating to what you said, they are first focused on California; if they don't tank, then they will expand to other regions in the USA. Then they will probably try to go overseas with LHD, and only after all of those could I see them going RHD. Aptera will have to be very successful and be producing in very large volumes before they consider RHD; sorry :(

LeeW:
This is a quote from page three of a GizMag article (http://www.gizmag.com/aptera-typ1-three-wheel-electric-vehicle/8392/3/) about the Aptera:
Fambro says that the volumes will be more than enough to make the company profitable with plans afoot to extend the Aptera brand beyond U.S. shores. Other markets deemed suitable for the Typ-1 include Canada, Australia and New Zealand where the relatively spacious roads would suit the footprint of the design. In Europe and elsewhere variations are that could include four-wheel, four- seater models but as Fambro explains, future versions will strive to retain the Aptera's distinctive look: “You'll know its an Aptera”.
That's kind of a mixed message, I know. It is not overwhelmingly optimistic that Aptera will start selling in the U.K. anytime soon :(, but on a positive note... they also have right-hand drives in Australia, right? :)
If I have to wait ages (I'd like one for early 2012), I wonder how difficult it would be to convert it myself to RHD? I know it is often done with other cars and there are even companies which specialise in RHD conversion but it seems like they do it by just buying RHD parts from the manufacturer. For this car RHD parts won't exist thus there will be alot of expensive custom machining needed. If I wanted to convert an Aptera, It looks like I'd need to fabricate new mirrored trim panels for the dash and also move the steering wheel and move the glass cockpit to the other side.

LeeW: Sounds like you may have to wait for the Typ-2. :(

Wow, LeeW there may be a better chance of getting a right-hand drive Aptera than I thought.
Pulled up this older post by "Steve" (assuming Aptera's Steve Fambro) commenting on the rear hatch and he mentions the British Commonwealth! I guess Aptera is at least thinking of going Euro with the Typ-1!

England sounds like a ready made market. If Reva can sell hundreds then Aptera should be able to do thousands. Just have to register it as a quadracycle. Er...wait a sec. That would require 4 wheels, no?
Anyhow, I'm sure it'd be a receptive market.

I can't imagine that the Brits would balk at an Aptera, since they allow the Peel P50 (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andy.carter/index.html) on their streets:

If I saw one of those on the street, I'd have thought that the circus had come to town ;)

That looks encouraging. I don't think I'd have the guts to start pulling a $30k car apart.
According to wikipedia, 34% of people drive on the left (thus need RHD), including England, Ireland, Japan, australia, new zealand, South Africa, and India.
