First Aptera Three Wheeler Rolls Out the Door, Production Begins in October
Today at 5:26 PM

The first pre-production version of the 2e — the three wheeled car designed by Aptera — emerged from the factory today.
Aptera also reiterated that it will try to start selling the car in October. Earlier, it had hoped to release the vehicle in 2008, but had to delay.
The electric car will go 100 miles on a charge and get up to 90 miles an hour. It will also go from zero to 60 in 10 seconds. That’s not going to beat a Tesla Roadster, or even my 2004 Nissan Sentra that I bought from the used car division from Hertz. But for an electric car, the 2e might be somewhat cheap: The lithium-ion battery car will cost between $25,000 and $45,000.
If the company can keep it toward the $25,000 range, we’re talking reasonably priced electric cars.
Aptera buyers, of course, will also get to enjoy the thrill of owning something that wouldn’t look too far out of place being driven by Pan-Am stewardesses to the International Wing of JFK Airport. The car has three wheels and a swoopy, curvaceous design, sort of the way people in the ’60s imagined the future. Shiny gold jumpsuit not included.
The car will first be delivered to customers in California with broader distribution in the U.S. in 2010.
Three-wheeled vehicles don’t have a great history in the U.S. The Dymaxion, coined by wacky futurist Buckminster Fuller, was involved in some high-profile wrecks in the prototype stage. Zap has had very limited success with the Xebra. Perhaps the most successful three-wheeler has been the Big Wheel.
Still, they’re fun to drive. I haven’t been in the Aptera, but I took a spin in the VentureOne from Venture Vehicles in 2007. That three wheeler tilts when you drive. It was a blast and I was only afraid of being mowed down by an SUV once.

Hey, its nice to see 3 (maybe 4?) REAL Apteras, and not a SolidWorks rendering.

Zooming in on that photo. I don't see any seam in the door's window glass, indicating that they abandoned the roll-down windows. They may not open at all.

Perhaps Aptera decided that with the outrigger wheels, it would be a l-o-n-g reach to the ATM or the parking lot ticket dispenser anyway, and abandoned the openable window concept.

A dab of Photoshop, lightening the image, and it appears that there is a new dashboard again, with what appears to be a GPS-ish display panel in the center.

Sleek little side view mirrors (both sides!), solar cells on the rooftop, tiny bump that is probably the shark fin camera, definitely a Front Wheel Drive setup and new wheel fairings.

Nah, they've been promising that over and over again.

I took a spin in the VentureOne from Venture Vehicles in 2007. That three wheeler tilts when you drive.I don't think so. The VentureOne (recently renamed Persu Hybrid) is not in production yet. Kanellos actually took a spin (http://news.cnet.com/Are-VentureOnes-three-wheels-better-than-four/2100-11389_3-6215875.html) in a gas-powered Carver vehicle.

In the EV cast they mentioned opening up the lower sill of the door to help egress .
I wonder if the doors were made larger to compensate and give enough room for power windows... Full roll down?

Karen,

Yes, they *have* been promising that the windows will open, so maybe the large single window simply rolls down a few inches.

It *does* seem that the shape of the door has changed since the Typ-1, Zen. Zen's trailing half of the door, in all those photos with the door(s) open, show a much more rounded shape. The 2e doors seem to have been cut so that the bottom of the door is, well, not square, but at least it seems bigger.

Hey, its nice to see 3 (maybe 4?) REAL Apteras, and not a SolidWorks rendering.

What worries me is not that I see 4 different Apteras in the picture...
But that I think I see a Mk0, Mk1, 2e, etc in the picture...

To me, the first car has mirrors and a fin, the second car has no mirrors and no fin, the last car has only one door open and the curve of the door is different than the rest...

I am not a nay-sayer towards Aptera, just noticing what I think I see. In fact I would gladly double up my reservation deposit to have the option of sitting in an Aptera to see if my 6' 3" frame can comfortably fit in the car.

PS> I bought a prototype EV, back in 1996 (http://nogas.org/ev/My_Test_Drive.html) and loved it quirks and all.

ha, well that would make for a good "evolution" side photo...

Mk0, Mk1, 2e.... ape, cro-mag, man
