I read the stuff on Ken Curry and Softworks LLC and LionEV, so red flags are going off everywhere. But yet, I'm still intrigued enough to ask: does anyone know the low-down on the Ford Escape conversions offered through the company? Or how many actual units of any conversions (as they used to offer other kinds before deciding to go with the Escape) they've made and shipped to actual customers? And how does a Ford Escape Hybrid conversion exist when a Ford Escape Hybrid also exists? Seems fishy, but I just really want it to be true... *sigh* why must they play with my heart?

They are not taking a standard Escape and making it a PHEV. They are converting the Escape Hybrid and modifying it to allow for charging from the grid at home.
I am in the process of doing the same conversion myself to a Toyota Prius. It involves removing the original battery pack and installing a larger capacity pack. Installing an onboard charger to recharge the pack from a wall outlet. Some software changes in a new onboard computer that will "spoof" the original computer into thinking the original pack is still there. A few safety interlocks to keep the driver from using the car when it is plugged in and for running the vent fans when it is charging.......
Anyhow that is the broad brush idea. The end result is that you now have a car that can run as pure EV mode for about 40 miles (depends on the battery pack you choose) and beyond that will work like an ordinary hybrid. City milage is likely to be over 100mpg but that is confusing because you have to include the cost of charging from the wall. Even including those costs it will be a cost equivalent of over 100mpg (depending on driving habits and the local terrain).
As far a LionEV, not sure what to think of them. I'd definetly not do business with anyone over the internet for such an item. I would only make a transaction of this sort face to face.
Good Luck,
Mike

Why is it that people can see "convicted scammer" and think, "Hmm, I wonder if I should do business with this guy or not?"
Scammer = Scammer. If you like your money, keep it far away from anyone with a conviction for scamming. This means LionEV, and it means SparkEV.

Some people are run by their emotions... like literally possessed by them. It's really quite tragic, really.
