View Full Version : When Aptera is for sale can I trade in my current car like a regular auto dealership?

Will Aptera be accepting trade-ins at the time of purchase?

I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'm curious as to what people's thoughts are... I'm sure the vast majority of us will be purchasing an Aptera as a substitute for a car that we already own. Looks like a slew of parallel "CraigsListings" are in the works?

Hi, Shooty: That's a question only Aptera can answer for sure. You should drop them a note and see what they respond. Maybe they'll include it in their FAQs, since other people are likely to pose the same question.

My "gut reaction"... is that they probably won't want to take trade-ins --at least not with the first batches of Apteras. That would require more than sales outlets and service bays: Fambro would have to arrange for large parking lots and hire used-car salesmen. I'd want to avoid that if I were in his shoes! :D But your guess is as good as mine at this point.

Will the company make it as painless as possible to trade in my existing car to buy the Aptera? It would be greatly appreciated if they did this.

I doubt it. I wouldn't think the Aptera dealerships would be all that much like traditional dealerships (in a good way). I hoping for a less pressure and less stress experience. I would think they would be too busy with the 2e, 2h, and 2g that they wouldn't have time to deal with used cars and re-selling them. But maybe I'm wrong.

They could always partner with existing dealerships to take care of it for them.

Aptera could buy only GM cars and crush them as revenge for the EV1

We can maybe edit the '4000 Apteras' image and replace one Aptera with one Trad-In ICE car as the Atperas are delivered!

Nice thought, but don't expect it to happen. Firstly, there are no dealerships - sales are direct from the factory. They can operate for years without any dealership involvement. Casita and Scamp travel trailers have been doing business this way for many years now, still no need for a middleman. Maybe it is better not having to share the profits with a dealer? Could maybe serve to help keep down the cost to the consumer?

Also if you getting your Aptera during first 3-6 months, I would keep the primary car for few months. Just in case there are problems. I am not saying there will be, but the probability is fairly high.

I'm planning to keep mine as a backup car. Depending on how much I use it, I may end up not bothering to put it on my policy, and simply tack on a rider for it whenever I need to use it.

It would be greatly appreciated if they did this. :confused:You will always get more for your used car in a private sale. Just objectively evaluate its condition, check the Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) and pick the private sale number. More than trade in, less than what you would pay for it used at a dealer. Make sure you are open and honest with any problems and that the sales bill says "AS IS". Plus, if you should buy an Aptera, you'll likely have a reasonable amount of notice on the delivery. You can seel the old car with an agreed upon "available on" date.

This, of course, presumes the car is in good shape and at least somewhat desirable. If it is a H2 or H3, just take it to the scrap metal dealer and help save the planet.

The reason GM, Ford, Chrysler et al take your car in trade, is because they want to ... no ... they NEED to incentivise. They incentivise because their products don't necessarily stand on their own, where they can wait until you unload your ol wreck (or newer one). Aptera doesn't want our old stuff . . . kind of like when you go in for a new toaster, or bathroom sink, or set of stainless flatwear. Do THESE stores take old junk in trade? Take it in to Costco, if you think you can get a few bucks for it. :D But no, you won't get Costco to buy your stuff, because they don't have to ... you WANT a new toaster (or Aptera) REGARDLESS. So we'll have to stick or old transportation on Craigs list, or the equivalent. Aptera is in the process of being born. They are strapped with the onerous duty of just being able to create a business ... statistically, a new business has a greater than 90% chance of failure. Maybe if/when Aptera actually "makes it" as an up & running, profit making business they can become a used car sales biz too. But do you think they need to? They have a waiting list, so no.

Sorry but the reason that dealers take your trade is to make money, the MFG has nothing to do with it, all you have to do is see the trade-in value vs. the wholesale blue book to know this, I made more on the trade in's than the new cars in a lot of cases when I sold cars many moons ago.

Sorry, the present has little to do with 'many moons ago'

This is the here & now. Auto dealers are droping like flies. They can't sell the junk they have, much less anybody else's unwanted car(s).

Not sure whether I'm gonna buy an aptera yet, but if I were gonna buy it, I'd keep my current car for roadtrips (Vegas, Mammoth, SF, etc...)

Hi Andy,

Or, you could get the hybrid version?

I think you will be able to trade it in, but don't expect them to give you as much as it's worth. You'll pay for the convenience of trading in your old vehicle.
