View Full Version : Odd Forum platform behavior

I've been noticing lately that sometimes when I'm logged in to the forums that I will suddenly lose all notification of new posts. I generally navigate the forums based on which conferences and which threads have new posts, moving through the threads that have new posts by reading one thread, then returning to the conference page and choosing another thread with new posts and reading those. But every once in a while when I click back to either the conference home or the Forum home page I'll suddenly see that all conferences and threads have been marked as read and I no longer know where the new posts are. I've missed some stuff this way.
Yesterday, this happened again and I noticed that it happened after I backed up one page of posts to check on something and then returned to the conference home page to go to the next thread. Apparently if I don't navigate straight through but back up a page the forum software marks all posts as new.
This is incredibly annoying and must be a bug in the software. Can it be fixed?
Thanks,
Tom

I'm with you on that - I have been observing very similar behavior. I have not tracked it to a particular sequence, just that I lose my unread thread markers. I have just had to read through all forums, checking the last post time for each thread manually.

I read several forums and THIS ONE is the only forum that marks ALL FORUMS READ automatically after I am logged in for about 3 to 5 minutes. It has been that way for a long time BUT I just don't let it bother me much. I enjoy the content too much not to continue reading.... I was hoping an upgrade in the software for the forum might fix it but it didn't the last time it was updated.
Maybe the forum MASTER can get it fixed...

This "feature" is why I created this thread (http://www.apteraforum.com/showthread.php?t=2333). If this forum were changed to preserve the "unread" status of posts, I would have less need for a wildcard searches. (Though, they would still be nice to have.)
I am in the habit of logging in, clicking on the "New Posts" link, then opening all threads with unread posts in a separate tabs before reading any post. That's how I work around this behavior.

To avoid the problem, I read every message thread from the beginning every time I log on.
It only takes me 23 hours now to read the forums.

Heh. There are enough threads and long conversations that calling this "feature" no big deal is missing the opportunity to get people wanting to read this information. It is a bug, not a feature, and having to work around it is simply silly. Goodonya Randy for figuring it out but that is one hell of a kludgy way of solving a problem.
There is enough new activity in here every day in a variety of subjects here that I'm missing a lot of it because of this bug and it is annoying as hell. This is one smart group of people and a great resource for alternative vehicle technology even for those of us who can't buy an Aptera yet.

Yeah, the same thing is happening to me. If I read a few threads and get caught-up and then post a reply, say within 20 minutes of logging in, all threads show me their tail lights and the envelopes are all closed as if I had read them all. If I log out and return later in the day, I still see tail lights and closed envelopes. The pattern repeats the next day the same way... very annoying.

Unfortunately whoever runs this place doesn't seem to care enough to even bother with this thread. It may just be that this is an informal enough space that we have to take what we can get, which is fine I guess.

Yes, the "jump to first unread post in the thead" feaure seems to be missing, along with the "bold" fonts for topics with new, unread posts. Both were very useful features.
What happened to them?

That feature works for me. I just have to click on the green check mark at the beginning of the thread title to go to the end of the old postings and then scroll to read the new ones. But if I linger too long on the site, or get distracted by something else and don't leave the site, it automatically marks everything as read, even though I haven't read it all, which is a really huge bug and I cannot figure out why any software would be written to even do that.
