With the Automotive X Prize competition, Aptera has stood apart from its competition--literally--being a germinating business that presents itself with a bold corporate image. Where the other competitors have been cramped in the shared garages, Aptera sets up shop alongside its impressive 18-wheeled hauler apart from the other teams. But this popular favorite was humbled in the Shakedown phase by the emergency-avoidance maneuver test, as captured on video. A key question I had entering this new, more vital phase, would Aptera be ready?
In speaking with team leader, Marques McCammon, he explained what happened with the Shakedown and assured me the team was ready for the Knockout.
As McCammon describes it, the contest exposes projects under development. For Aptera, this meant that the public saw a prototype model facing a new test for the first time. The team had adjusted their production schedule to fit the X Prize schedule, meaning they may not have been as ready as they hoped, and the company is still conducting “coarse tuning” on the Aptera 2e.

The Aptera door that famously opened on one of the 38 attempts required to pass the emergency-avoidance maneuver test is a good example of a team learning in the field. The doors use an electric actuator, much like that in a Chevrolet Corvette or Dodge Viper, whereby you push the button and the door opens. That button had been put on the door trim facing the driver’s left knee. In normal driving, it would likely be a non-issue, but when threading through the cones at the performance limits, the driver’s knee tapped the button. It has since been moved.
The car’s handling was challenged by that test, and since then, Aptera has worked to change the suspension tuning, without significant design alternations. McCammon assures me that they have it down; we’ll soon see since Aptera is scheduled to run through the test again today.
Monday, the Aptera tackled the skid pad without fuss. In fact, the three-wheeler pulled .86 lateral--way above the minimum requirement. (And more than we could do in our rental car.)
The Aptera 2e is at least a year away from production, and refinements will continue for many months. But they are a team to watch, and we’ll be doing just that as competition continues.

Or - Sorry we made you look like idiots and did you fix that crazy door thing?

It makes more and more sense every time I read one of these articles and they compare designs from the So-1 being very similar to a Dodge Viper.

Wonder if it's an unconscious thing that PW is trying to make an Electric Viper out of the Aptera?

I still think these two embarassments were totally avoidable.
The door issue is old. It happened on one of the PP's.
The handling issue could of been detected and fixed with one day of testing.

Rembrant,
agreed on both counts, but you can't get rid of that much WEIGHT in one day!!!

Except they didn't lose any weight, they adjusted the suspension.

I don't like the tone of the article that Aptera is STILL making changes. PBW said they only had one chance to get it right. So which is it? I'm willing to concede that we can't believe anything PBW and MM says, but the Xprize competition allows for no further changes for the knockout round. The eVaro couldn't remove a range extender, but the Aptera can make suspension and firmware changes? At this stage, these EVs should be more firmware dependent than hardware.

"Adjusted their production schedule to fit the xprize". This is ridiculous. What production schedule? They haven't enough money to get to production.

The words.. and action needed are... Beta test, or shake down cruise, or work out the bugs.. I just built a house here in the Philippines and everything that can go wrong does! Water leaks, drainage issues, electrical stuff not working.. and on and on.

So, bring out a vehicle that has 100 miles or less on it, and expect that everything will go wrong.. it did. Surprise!

I remodeled my house myself and seven years later no issues, I also have a business in that industry and it's all about the quality of the work not testing after the fact. I built two conversions one with over 12K miles and the only issue was adjusting the battery regulators, I did test it for an hour or two once competed though and I made sure it was safe but I spent much time planning properly up front and anticipating design issues. After all the APtera designs and redesigns the weight should never have been surprise, the parts in this car are not custom components. Since some in the Aptera team have proven record of lying, there is not much stock in the information we get from them and although they may have some skilled team members, there seems to be big holes in design testing and management on the project, MM does not strike me as being detail focused nor a person with a sense of urgency. People laugh at pointing out the many spelling errors, etc over the years in the news letters but if they can't get that right and don't see the need to get it right then as I have said all along, that attitude, lack of focus and work ethic was an indicator of how they would approach the rest of the business and the build and testing of the vehicle. The date on the newsletter says it all.

Poke fun at it an ignore the signs, the culture and customer ethic of this company is more likely the reason for so many issues and the inbred culture prohibits push back to bad ideas designing and building for one persons vision. It is more single sided than it was before the takeover and this culture is what will kill this car regardless if they put them in production. I saw this in the two dot coms I worked for and I watched it kill a great project in a fortune 50 I worked on. It trickles from the top and without diversity and the ability to accept competing ideas it's going to crash and burn. Enough said, I expect another Aptera drama episode perhaps not related directly to the car in the next few months. I hope they get a new management team but that looks unlikely at this point as the have diluted the appeal of the product too much at this point.

They have more than bugs.

It looks like consumer reports removed their video clip which included the so1 door flying open. I'm appalled that they would respond to the whining of MM. We still have the slomotion one from Matthijs. Consumer reports is supposed to have a reputation for calling out the fake. Bummer for their reputation.

Let this be a warning that unflattering Aptera articles and videos get removed. Download before they're gone. PBW is getting nips at rewriting history.
