I ran across this article regarding vandalism directed at the Prius:

While it is impossible to say what the motivation is for the perpetrator(s) of this crime it would be a sad day to find out that an auto would be targeted because it is more efficient or its exhaust is cleaner than most other vehicles on the road.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that the Priuses weren't targeted for their clean performance per se, but rather for the *stereotype of the people* who buy and drive them -- upper-middle class yuppies. And being that these all happened in posh Petaluma, the vandals might simply be from a nearby but less yuppie town who are generally resentful of Petalumans, and the Prius just makes for an easy and meaningful target. I imagine one opinion -- not mine, certainly -- could be that while a Lexus is just about being rich and flaunting it without passing judgement or announcing one's morals, a Prius is about being rich AND self-righteous. And I'm saying this as someone whose blood runs green, mind you.

My take on the vandalism, as posted on AutoblogGreen:
"Take that, clean air!"
(WHACK!)
"Don't want to send oil money to our enemies do ya?"
(WHACK!)
"This'll teach you to advance automotive technology!"
(WHACK!)
But yeah, Butter is probably right. The vandals probably have the goal of emotionally attacking the owners because of their stereotypes; damaging the vehicles is just a way to do that.

There's something almost rather quaint about throwing rocks into car windows. Okay, of course I'd feel completely violated if that happened to me, but at least windows are more easily replaced than like... I don't know... headlights or something. I'm not trying to make an excuse. Nevermind me. FOrget I said this.

Unfortunately, this attitude is nothing new for many cyclists. Some people seem to assume we don't pay taxes for some strange reason, and therefore have no right to be on the road, especially if we're in their way. I get much less of this attitude as a pedestrian, unless you count the drivers trying to run me over in the crosswalk. "Right of weight" seems to be the modus operandi on the street.

I found when biking in the city, motorist had a quick change of attitude when I'd reach down and grab my kryptonite U-lock.

You can't please everyone...SO...Just be happy to live with the decisions you make despite of other's opinion and may the cost of video surveillance be cheap enough to install around our homes/businesses as well as record images from our rear facing cameras and added front facing as well as interior looking cameras to record the culprit(s) when they want to vandalize, harrass or steal our rides.;)
paranomic videos would be a very nice tool to determine fault and liability when it come to a collision or to fight the dang PHOTO COPs.:o
I have already hooked up the wife's salon with a 4 camera system ($400 special from Costco). Next thing is do do the same for my shop and home...then...when I get my Aptera, look out...:D
Anyone know what it will take to hook up a couple more cameras and record the immages captured from the existing cameras as well as the added cameras?
