View Full Version : Nova was lame...

Aptera #1159

They had a lot of ethanol, hybrid, fuel cell coverage. Meh. Those technologies are lame. Why convert electricity to hydrogen when you can just use the electricity? They only covered the Tesla and the Volt when it came to electric. Maybe because the documentary was produced earlier, before the Aptera became popular.

I found Karen's wik (http://www.daughtersoftiresias.org/greenwiki/Main_Page)i to be the most informative.

Yeah, gotta agree, it was a disappointment. Aptera #1159 is talking about the PBS Nova special "Car of the Future". I was hoping for so much more coverage of EVs and upcoming battery technology. The show needed to be about 2 hours long and with deeper coverage.

Maybe PBS will take another look at this subject in the upcoming year...

For those of you that missed it, the show will be repeated and the schedule is here: "Car of the Future" (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/car/)

Watched it for about 15 minutes that switched over to Battle Star Galactica.

No Aptera.
The only "real" car shown was the Prius.
The Tesla does not really exist yet, I think.
The volt certainly does not yet exist.
Nothing on current (or upcoming) battery technology.
Showed a Hydrogen-fuel transit bus in Iceland.
And ... perhaps a few more that I already forgotten.

Jay Leno has a Tesla. The first production model.

How many Tesla's have been "produced" so far?
Starting with 1 or 2 a week in March 2008, they say.
So, maybe they have made 2 or 4 or so by now?
I guess there is a substantial waiting list (maybe 600?)
of folks that want to spend the roughly $100k.

I believe the Nova program indicated that Tesla
was having "production" of 300 done overseas.
Possibly "final assembly" is done here ... maybe
adding the batteries?

Note:
Tesla says that they are abandoning their two-speed
transmission for a single-speed "transmission"
(and stronger motor drive circuitry and more motor cooling)
to get the 0-60 speed they initially specified.

So, like the Aptera, they will use single-ratio "gearing". :D

Jay Leno does not have a Tesla. The car he showed in the video belongs to Elon Musk. Not sure what # Jay Leno is inline. But so far only one Tesla has made it to the states. No sightings yet that any of the other cars have shipped yet.

The next few should be delivered any day now. I know a few have been built but unsure of their exact status regarding delivery.
