Come to think of it, the time when gas are sold pennies to the gallon, and they came up well, almost a hundred years ahed of their time.

Yeah, the late 1800s/early 1900s nearly hit the renewables jackpot. There was also a lot of interest in not just wind, but also solar thermal back then, and even some effective solar thermal pilot plants in remote places where power was hard to come by. But they established better coal shipping routes, battery development stalled, and so on, and history ended up quite different than it otherwise could have.
